On the Baltic Sea trawling and coastal fishing

20. February 2009 - 0:00

On 18 February 2008, the Deputy Secretary General for Rural Development and Fisheries Policy Toomas Kevvai gave a speech for the European Parliament about the Baltic Sea trawling and coastal fishing. In his speech, he stressed the need for efficient surveillance on fishing and brought out the different problems facing trawling and coastal fishing in the Baltic Sea region.

In addition to efficient control on fishing, it is also important to renew the fishing fleet and develop a sustainable fisheries sector, which would be attractive to young newcomers and help to preserve the long tradition of fishing of the Baltic Sea people.
