Hiiumaa cow keepers receive a million from the state

20. April 2009 - 0:00

Under special conditions, the cow keepers of Hiiumaa receive a million kroons from the state, in order to buy a milk tanker and therefore make more money for raw milk. The Minister of Agriculture Helir-Valdor Seeder signed the corresponding contract with the Rural Development Foundation today.

The farmers from Hiiumaa turned to the state with their request for help already in the beginning of the year, because due to special location, the industries lowered the buying- in price of their milk under 2 kroons, which is not enough for profitability. According to Seeder, it is clear that dairy farming cannot survive with these prices and help had to be given. The Ministry of Agriculture decided on supporting Hiiumaa farmers already in February, but time was needed to decide how to use the support money. The dairy producers themselves would have liked to receive money just as compensation but the goal of the state was to support investments and cooperative activities, which would bring about benefits also in the future.
