Illar Lemetti: we will also implement the general priorities of the Estonian Presidency in agriculture

„The Ministry of Rural Affairs will also implement the general priorities of the Estonian Presidency in agriculture, while focusing on the sustainability of soils, safe foods, open markets, and use of digital solutions,“ said the Secretary General of the Ministry of Rural Affairs of Estonia Illar Lemetti at the opening of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome on June 28.

In his opening speech, Mr. Lemetti thanked Malta for its excellent work and promised that Estonia will continue working on a solution for all active issues, and hoped to see an effiecient and fruitful co-operation with everybody during the Estonian Presidency.

During the opening celebration, the carpet „Kodutee“ or „Way Home“ made by Maasike Maasik was presented. In addition to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Rural Affairs of Estonia Illar Lemetti, the Head of the EU Delegation Ambassador Jan Tombinski, and the Ambassador of Malta Vanessa Frazier also took the floor. At the end of the event, the Baltic Sea Culinary Route mobile application was introduced.

During his visit to Rome, Mr. Lemetti will also meet with the Vice-President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Mr. Michel Mordasini, the Director of Executive Board Secretariat of the World Food Programme (WFP) Ms. Harriet Spanos, the Director of Cabinet of the Director-General of the the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Mr. Mario Lubetkin, and with the Italian small producers association Coldiretti.

Estonia is the President of the Council of the European Union from July until December 2017 and will, within that time, help shape the positions of the Council of the EU and lead working groups.  Estonia has four main priorities during the Presidency: an open and innovative European economy, a safe and secure Europe, the free movement of data and a digital Europe, and an inclusive and sustainable Europe.
